All Roads Lead to… Rhodes #Day 6

A lot of big birds!

Waterfall at Valley of the Butterflies

In the morning we took the thirty minute drive to visit the Farma of Rhodes, set deep in the belly of the island, away from the water.

The Farma is a small petting zoo, which allows you to interact and feed almost all of the animals that you can see. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and reckon the price of admission is justified almost right away, when we were allowed to feed the ostriches while walking amongst them.

Most of them were taller than I am, and it’s extremely humbling to be in their presence, knowing that if they wanted to, those ostriches could do me some serious damage and I could do very little to stop them.

The other highlight of the zoo was the lemurs. They are very cute and extremely soft and friendly. At one point I had a couple of them clambering over me.

After a couple of hours feeding the animals, we moved on to the Valley of the Butterflies, which is only a mile or so down the road.

Unfortunately, this attraction was much harder work than I had anticipated. We already knew it was too early in the season to witness the thousands upon thousands of butterflies (moths, really) that arrive there every year, but we were not prepared for the constant climb towards the much-required snack bar at the top.

I thought it was a valley, not a mountain!

Having said that, the drive back to our hotel was spectacular, as the landscape took us to higher and higher altitudes on a narrow and winding road.

All in all, a day of two halves, and another couple of things ticked off the to-do list.
